They all contain large amounts of ethanol - the active ingredient that gets you drunk. Then there are congeners - chemicals that give the drink flavor and color. Congeners also have some psychoactive effects and may be responsible for the severity of the hangover next day. Vodka supposedly has the mildest hangover of all the spirits because it has very few congeners (clear, colorless and odorless). Absinthe has some interesting congeners, such as thujone from the wormwood used to flavor it, that can be hallucinogenic.
