Thanks, Denise. I tried a number of drugs before trying Lexapro. I tried Effexor, Prozac (made me suicidal), three other SSRIs, 2 TCAs, two combos of TCA and SSRI, 2 SSRIs with Wellbutrin and Provigil with an SSRI. I tried the natural route, in addition to meds. I couldn't tolerate the TCAs - made my heart race and and worsened my orthostatic hypotension (I have very low blood pressure already). Wellbutrin made me feel very aggressive and angry (it was not pleasant). My main problem is severe anxiety, which, when left uncontrolled, leads to very deep, dark depression. The pdoc I was seeing before the one I have now (who is excellent) refused to deal separately with the anxiety - just kept upping the SSRI dose and refusing to let me use anything for the overwhelming anxiety. My new pdoc (of over a year now) has said I don't have MDD or bipolar (bipolar had been considered early in my treatment) and recognizes that anxiety is my big problem that needs to be addressed or it leads to depression and suicide ideation. He is comfortable with me using Xanax as needed (sometimes daily for periods of time) to ensure the anxiety does not spiral out of control.
Anyway, I am so sorry for all the troubles you have been having finding a med or combo of meds to provide you with some relief. And, I was particularly saddened to read about how you were treated recently by that pdoc and his demeaning assessment of you and your situation. He sounded like an absolute turd who should be kept in a lab and not allowed to have any contact with human patients.
Good luck to you. My thoughts are with you.
