In reply to Depressed Men Have Lower Testosterone Levels, posted by Iansf on November 22, 2006, at 12:34:11

I think low testosterone is caused by either or all of these:

1) A consequence of recurring episodes of depression over the long-term. May be stress-related.

2) An effect of the underlying biochemical imbalance or metabolic disorder causing the depression itself (as one of its mental symptoms)

3) Side effects (one of the hormonal imbalances) caused by some of the drugs given to treat depression

I don't really think that low testosterone can directly cause depression because many people who don't necessarily have depression may have low testosterone.
