So it isn't even a time release version? It amazes me that insurance companies can get away with considering generic Ritalin as even remotely the same as Concerta.

It's all the same substance--all methylphenidate--but Concerta has a much longer, smoother release mechanism. Methylphenidate Hcl is just generic Ritalin, and all gets pushed into the bloodstream in an hour or so.
