There is a theory (good theory in my opinion) that depression is due to overactive cholinergic mechanisms (relative to the monoamines). By raising the monoamines, you indirectly counteract acetylcholine. For some, direct antagonism of acetycholine can produce an antidepressant effect.
Acetylcholine is a necessary neurchemical, though stress often increases the sensitivity of the cholinergic system which can result in behavioral depression, anxiety etc.
