Traditional Ambien worked well for me for many years. May have been some placebo effect, or may have just been what my brain needed. Waking too early or being unable to get back to sleep only happened when I was extemely depressed. I know Ambien was supposed to be tolerance inducing, but I could still feel it 20 minutes after I took it, for several years. I only stopped it because I stopped everything for a while. When I suggested to gp I needed something again she tried Lunesta -nope, not for me. My new pdoc got me the Ambien CR.

I'm going to repeat the warning I give everyone when discussing Ambien. Go right to bed. The hypnotic effect can go weird. Especially if you had some alcohol.

sweet dreams,
James K
