I live in Ireland and we sometimes prescribe estrogen in perimenopausal women with hot flushes and night sweats which the woman finds intolerable.If the patient has not had a hysterectomy we usually add progesterone too or fit a Mirena coil/i.u.c.d.There is a very small risk of breast cancer so we tend to prescribe HRT only if essential.
