I took Ambien at 20mg along with a polypharmacy of other medications for at least a year because 10mg wasn't doing it. Of course everyone varies, but I suspect that a lot of people not only take it longterm but also at somewhat higher doses. I personally wouldnt go above 20, but who knows, and obviously not combine it with any other heavy CNS depressants (i.e. alcohol) at the same moment in time. I now take Lunesta but I may return to Ambien at some later point; Lunesta is a bit more subtle.
