You are right. Knowledge is power. While Psycho-Babble is a great place to gain knowledge, it can also stear you in the wrong direction. Are you living a large town/city? There are support groups for people who have parents with mental illness. How old are you? Actually, where do you live?
You are right that it does run in families. This mean you may (or may not) be predisposed to get it or some other form of mental illness. There are certain stressors that can bring it on if you are already predisposed such as: drug use, high levels of stress etc.
But as Phillipa pointed out, you are not going to get it just because it runs in the family. Do you know at what age your mom developed it?
