I only wish I had thought of this when I was trying to stop taking the crap, but then I had no idea there was any withdrawal; so I just stopped taking it one day:
Instead of taking the EffexorXR, why don't you ask your doctor to switch you to Effexor tablets so you can break them into smaller portions? They aren't time released, but that way you can break them into tiny pieces. It might make it easier to cut back and not have to contend with the stupid little balls in the pills if you want to cut back slowly, and you can always take a pill if you need one.
Figured that one out this morning. Duh....
