Little red spots on your skin?

Posted by afatchic on December 4, 2004, at 13:49:42

I just read a medical article online about ADs being associated with increased bleeding. I wondered if the prozac I took for years caused the petechiae rash (little red spots) I developed.

To test my hypothesis, I was wondering if anyone else developed petechiae after starting an AD. (It looks like little drops of blood right just your skin.)

Here's the major points of the article:

Antidepressant medications and particularly, SSRIs are associated with reduced serotonin uptake by platelets. As serotonin is necessary for platelets to aggregate in forming clots, researchers previously have examined the risk of bleeding associated with using antidepressant medications.

Antidepressants were categorized into three groups based on their degree of inhibition of serotonin reuptake:

* Low degree of inhibition of serotonin reuptake
o mirtazapine
o nefazodone
o trazodone
o nortriptyline
* Intermediate degree of inhibition of serotonin reuptake
o venlafaxine
o amitriptyline
o fluvoxamine
o citalopram
* High degree of inhibition of serotonin reuptake
o fluoxetine
o sertraline
o paroxetine
