For me inderal is the next best thing to benzos for anxiety. I noticed a real improvement when my dose went from 10mgs to 60mgs time-release per day. It was a little too sedating at first but within a week my body made the adjustment.

However if I indulge in foods I'm mildly allergic to or just plain overeat, the anxiety level increases as the inderal, which lowers the heart rate, collides with the allergic reaction which raises the heart rate.

Inderal hasn't completely solved my anxiety problem but I'm getting marked relief for the first time in years since I last took benzos. I no longer feel the need to self-medicate with alcohol, wild dagga, or other exotic herbs.
