Taking on inattentive-type ADD: meds, etc.

Posted by DSCH on September 11, 2003, at 13:53:01

It's been almost a month now that I have been off pemoline. I am feeling all around much better, and this I am attributing to diet (Atkins), vitamins/minerals (I take three of Solaray's Twice-Daily Fe-Free Energy Formula), daily intake of two mugs of licorice tea, and excercise (I shoot for two walks a day of 3.3 miles each). I weigh 236 rather than 255 pounds (and I have set a goal of attaining 200).

However, I feel I have started to backslide with my ability to focus, plan, and utilize time. I think it is now appropriate for me to reconsider meds now that whatever the mess was that was causing the hypersomnia, social withdrawl, reactive moods, "pseudo-hypoglycemia", and psychomotor/proprioception troubles has cleared up (I have the suspicion this was a beat-up HPA axis from being burned out over life and work stressors and my burst/crisis management approach to them). I dropped pemoline last month becuase I thought it was making me too hyper in motor activity and speed of thought in comparision to my short term memory and attention span. What do you recommend I look at target short term memory and attention span without too much body stimulation? Strattera?

Or should I be thinking of some other supplement strategy? I'm no longer convinved actyl-l-carnitine was really doing anything (the "improved hearing" was probably actually due to using a different media player on my computer that better utilizes the audio output! lol). I've tried TMG, noticed mild improvement in self-confidence with 1500 mg a week ago, no energy boost (napped with hours of dose); and today 1500 mg did nothing that I can notice. I think it's fair to assume at this point I am not under-methylated and that some bottleneck might be happening elsewhere.

Oh yes, sleep. I find it hard to shut down thinking at night and fall asleep (even after drinking a strong brandy/half-and-half cocktail), I can keep going to 2-3 AM. I wake up around 6-7 AM feeling OK. Then I hit a wall and make up the difference with a 2-3 hour midday nap.

Any thoughts?
