Of course a doctor should be consulted before you try raising the dose, but as far as I know Ambien is about as non-toxic as benzodiazepines. My psychiatrist personally had me try 80mg one night (which didn't work) and he says he has one patient with occasional (once every week or two) insomnia that responds to nothing but 100mg+ of Ambien or Sonata.
