In reply to paranoid schizophrenia medications, posted by Daniel J. on August 25, 2003, at 14:03:13
> After a strange and difficult episode with my 15 yr old son taking off through the neighborhood behaving oddly, we took him to a psychiatrist who diagnosed Antisocial behavior and depression. He put him on 5 mg lexapro and 5 mg Abilify. After 2 weeks the meds started helping but he couldn't sleep and had a poor apetite as well as tremors. He began to wander off in the wee AM hrs causing us to track him down in the neighborhood. We got him in with the Psy DR. asap and he put him on 10mg Zyprexa for acute psychosis and paranoia. He immediately starting eating and sleeping but after 2 1/2 weeks still has some strong Psychotic symptoms including paranoia, frequent agitation and Much pacing which now has become basketball (thank god we have a hoop in our driveway). Does he need a stronger dose of zyprexa or does it take longer to work? Are other meds better?

>Hi...I have had a similar reaction to Zyprexa alone, one which made me feel aggitated, so it may or may not be the med. For what it is worth, I found a good dose of Risperdal works better to calm me than Zyprexa. Of course we are all individuals. Again, check with your child's doctor...
Oh...and for the 'difficult' times (Esp. aggitated psychosis), I have read of the occassional older 'typical' antipsychotics being added but only *as needed*.
Best wishes,
Jay
