It's always both.
I know exactly what you mean, and it's always a combination. Antidepressants seem to help your lows be less low and your general happiness (when you're in a good situation) more of a true feeling. I think most would agree to this. I started an antidepressant shortly after a very rough break-up, and it helped, but only made me dwell on it slightly less. (not several hours per day, or all day). However, after the initial effects kicked in, I wasn't in communication with my ex and things were still hard.
It has so much to do with mood and your life-situation. I've rarely seen a great change in mood without being accompanied by a life situation change. It seems to be the antidepressant since you may have recently started it, and it is, but your response to the change in your situation is usually greatly enhanced by the antidepressant.
Good luck
