These three are pretty much the same. The Valium has the longest half-life (I think) and then Ativan and then Xanax. For me, Xanax and Ativan were least sedating. Valium was ok - but Ativan worked better. Doctors favor Klonopin (right now anyway) because it has such a long half-life which allows for a smoother action throughout the day. IT also has strong anti-panic properties and works well with other antidepressants.

Restoril is in the same family of the above meds, but is used as a sleeping med and is not forumlated to be used during the day for general anxiety. It works well for insomnia.
