> I've always struggled with my weight and work really hard at keeping it down and stable (116 -122 lbs). I regularly exercise and eat healthy. 4 weeks ago I was diagnosed with depression and given a 28 day course of 30mg Zispin/Remeron. Almost immediately I felt the benefits as one of my main symptoms was insomnia and I've slept like a baby every since. However the down side is I've gained 6lbs during this time. Not a lot some may say but to me it may as well as 6 stone. Any suggestions on what I should do? Do I increase or decrease the dose? Do I change medication or do I stop altogether? I really would rather be deprived of sleep than to gain more weight.
Hi. i don't exactly know what to tell you to do, but let me give you some of my opinions and hopefully it will help you make a decision. THIS GOES FOR ANYONE CONCERNED WITH REMERON AND WEIGHT GAIN.
i was on Remeron for a little while (about a month), and it increased my appetite like no drug ever has-- but i loved that (unfortunately i couldn't take how stupid i had become).
Anyway, it really seems like Remeron-induced weight gain is primarily a result of an increase in appetite (more than a lowered metabolism or anything). And with this appetite increase it's amazing how easily you can eat more than you usually do without even realizing it that much. But since you are hungrier so much more frequently, and since it is so much harder to get full, even moderately greater portions of food at each sitting can seem like normal portions (or less). But even eating slightly more than you usually do each time you eat, and eating even somewhat more frequently, can all add up to a significant weight increase eventually (and the same but opposite is true for losing weight)-- not to mention the added lack of activity from the lethargy. So my advice, if weight is your only concern with this drug, and if you think you can have enough control, is to be acutely *aware* or how much you are eating, and also compare it to how much you would normally eat. If you find yourself taking even a slIGHtly greater portion of food than you would, or should, then ... well just take no more than you would or should. If you can do this you should be able to keep extra weight off. (Also, exercise, drink lots of water, and all that jazz.) If you find that you are just too hungry too often for it to be worth it, then you should probably try something else, or augment, or maybe increase to a stimulating dose level.
