I got interested in Glycine after taking a chelated form of magnesium (mag glycinate). I got great affects from the pills which were like 90% glycinate and I believe the good effects came more from the glycine rather than the mag.

They made me feel more stable and free, and allowed more to chill more. So I looked into it and here is what I found below.

I also found that Glycine worked as a general inhibitory molecule, and seemed to have an affect upon NMDA.

ALso found a journal study linking glycine with better memory.

Here is some other info:

L-GLYCINE #39

Glycine is the simplest nonessential amino acid. It is called glycine because it resembles the sweet taste of glucose (blood sugar) and glycogen (liver starch). Glycine is required for optimum growth and for creatinine synthesis, a compound that is present in muscle tissue and is utilized in the construction of RNA and DNA. It is conceivable that under some conditions, glycine might become essential in humans.

Glycine is probably the third major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain; glycine therapy readily passes the blood-brain barrier. Glycine releases growth hormone when given at high doses; this is well documented.

Glycine, is now used by physicians in the treatment of muscular dystrophy and it has also been found useful in the improvement of hypoglycemia. Glycine plays a key roll in the development and quality of our skeletal muscles, tissues, and structural integrity. Glycine is essential for synthesis of nucleic acids, bile acids, and other nonessential amino acids within the body. Found in high concentrations in the skin and connective tissues, it is useful for repairing damaged tissues and promoting healing.

Glycine is necessary for central nervous system function and a healthy prostate. It can help prevent epileptic seizures, since it inhibits neurotransmitters. Useful in the treatment of manic (bipolar) depression. Clinical studies with individuals during acute manic attacks, calmness and cessation of the manic episode occurred within one hour. Patients taking lithium for depression have shown an increase in plasma glycine. Glycine is also effective for treatment of hyperactivity. Having too much within the body can cause fatigue, but the correct amount produces energy.

The combination of glycine with aspirin decreases the harmful effects of aspirin, preventing acid build-up and damage to stomach lining. Used in many gastric antacid agents. The proper ratio between glycine and aspirin is probably fifty-fifty.

Useful for gout, since taking glycine orally will increase the renal clearance of uric acid, thereby lowering the serum urate concentration. Useful for detoxification, glycine alleviates the toxic effects of several substances such as phenol and benzoic acid, detoxification of benzoic acid is important, since bezoate derivatives are common in food additives. Other claims for detoxification by glycine relate to its ability to stimulate the synthesis of glutathuione, the most important antioxidant detoxification system of living things including man.

Glycine is a very nontoxic amino acid; studies with 30 grams produced no side-effects.

ANd here is a new study as well.

L-Glycine: a novel antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory, and cytoprotective agent.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW In recent years, evidence has mounted in favor of the antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory and cytoprotective effects of the simplest amino acid L-glycine. This article will focus on the recent findings about the responsible mechanisms of protection and review the beneficial effects of glycine in different disease states.RECENT FINDINGS Glycine protects against shock caused by hemorrhage, endotoxin and sepsis, prevents ischemia/reperfusion and cold storage/reperfusion injury to a variety of tissues and organs including liver, kidney, heart, intestine and skeletal muscle, and diminishes liver and renal injury caused by hepatic and renal toxicants and drugs. Glycine also protects against peptidoglycan polysaccharide-induced arthritis and inhibits gastric secretion and protects the gastric mucosa against chemically and stress-induced ulcers. Glycine appears to exert several protective effects, including antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory and direct cytoprotective actions. Glycine acts on inflammatory cells such as macrophages to suppress activation of transcription factors and the formation of free radicals and inflammatory cytokines. In the plasma membrane, glycine appears to activate a chloride channel that stabilizes or hyperpolarizes the plasma membrane potential. As a consequence, agonist-induced opening of L-type voltage-dependent calcium channels and the resulting increases in intracellular calcium ions are suppressed, which may account for the immunomodulatory and antiinflammatory effects of glycine. Lastly, glycine blocks the opening of relatively non-specific pores in the plasma membrane that occurs as the penultimate event leading to necrotic cell death.SUMMARY Multiple protective effects make glycine a promising treatment strategy for inflammatory diseases.

I have barely scraped the surface of info on Glycine but I am quite excited/interested in it.

Wat u guys reckon?

Cheers

> Anyone know about the use of glycine upon depression or bi-polar?
