Hi - never tried lexapro, but started with Zoloft, which didn't work for me. Tried Wellbutrin, Serzone, Prozac, Lithium, and Pamelor, none of which worked, and some had horrible side effects. Effexor is the only antidepressant that has worked, for more than 4 years now. It has a stimulating effect on me, even though I take it at 7 in the morning, so I take Ambien at night to sleep. I was taking 200 mg of Effexor in the beginning, which ended up being way too much, wasn't depressed at all, which was nice, but wasn't feeling much of anything, good or bad. Totally unmotivated most of the time. Got down to 100mg once a day and that has been just right.
Good luck to you in your search for the right med!
