I've got an interesting thyroid story - for all my life till last year (2002) I had NORMAL (well within the so-called "normal" range) thyroid numbers for all of them.
Then a bad episode of depression, anxiety and mood swings hit and my family took me to a thyroid expert - an MD who used to practice as a pdoc and was/is a supposed "expert" in thyroid problems.
Turns out he uses a completely different range than the common one, his is much narrower, so he finds like 99% of his patients are HYPOTHYROID, including me.
He is into natural supplements so he put me on one that is the hypoallergenic version of Armour Thyroid.
Well, about a month after taking it like 3 times a day without food (his directions) I got so anxious it was incredible. Landed in the hospital where they did a thyroid test when I told them I was on a thyroid med and my TSH was ZERO, and my T4 (I think it was that one) was skyrocketed out of the range. They told me my thyroid had basically SHUT DOWN.
They took me off that med, a pdoc there did some research on it and found that it is NOT regulated by the FDA, therefore you don't know how much you're really getting from pill to pill, bottle to bottle.
I was put on Lithium for my mood swings and on Synthroid. Within DAYS, my thyroid tested in the "normal" range, and has been ever since.
Even though I'm on a very low dose of Lithium, my current pdoc wants me to remain on Synthroid for as long as I need to be on Lithium, especially in light of what happened to my previously normal thyroid.
And there you have it.
