In reply to News: dev of uridine prodrug for MDD Bipolar d/o, posted by jrbecker on April 28, 2003, at 14:57:34
It's great to see a wonderful center like Harvard (and McLean) investigating a completely new pharmacological approach to depressive disorders, and using modern methods of neuro-imaging to see what the effects of uridine in the brain actually are. It's such an exciting change from the former standard of ordinary clinical trials relying just on patient self-reporting- and it's clearly breaking out of the frame of trying to tweak serotonin, nor-epinephrine and dopamine levels.
Uridine is apparently essential for RNA and DNA synthesis in all of our cells. I am guessing that the idea must be to enhance the production of a correct balance of all the neurotransmitters, and to maintain the health of neurons, and maybe allow the continuing birth of new neurons, even when the destructive effects of excess glucocorticoids, diminshed cerebral blood flow, etc. are operating. Well, I'm making it sound good, without really knowing what I am talking about!
Thanks for posting it!
