Thank you for your input on HRT. I am beginning to suspect that this is an underlying problem that is going undiagnosed and undertreated. For me, it was low estrogen but for others the problem could be the opposite, vis a vis, estrogen dominence. Just by the difference two days on estrogen has made in the way I feel, I'm convinced that hormones play a vital role in brain metabolsim. Currently I am taking many of the supplements that you mention in your other posts (cytomel, omegabrite fish oil, phosphatidyl serine (300mg), alpha lipoic acid, DHEA (25 mg), numerous antioxidants and vitamins) I also take galantamine for memory (works great), ritalin, yohimbe, reboxetine & prozac. I have been taking all the above for the past several months with dismal results. Nothing would activate my brain until the estrogen got the machinery running again. I am 49 and menopausal. I went through an early menopause at 46 and looking back was probably peri-menopausal at 35. I can only wonder how different my life would have turned out if only I had started HRT then. Although I have occasional bouts of depression (without suicidal ideation), my major complaint is the dysthymia and anhedonia & social phobia that have destroyed my life. Before I was menopausal, I had great success with ritalin but once I went through menopause it just wasn't reaching the receptors the way it once had. I tried everything, SSRI's, reboxetine, wellbutrin (highest possible dose), effexor, desimpramine (partial success), seroquel, sulpride, amisulpride, selegiline, lithium, tegretol, remeron and lot's of other stuff both alone and in combination. Nothing worked. As for the cortisol issue, I will have that checked again. I did a saliva test a few years back and it was OK. A year ago, I had all my hormones checked and my estrogen was extremely low and my progesterone and testosterone on the high end. Curious, since I have no libido. Anyway, I would suggest that everyone have there hormone levels checked. It could turn out to be the key that turns your brain on or slows it down if your the anxious type. Sorry for the long post. I guess I got carried away.
