very good questions cem

unfortunately such information seems hard to come by....

i had it mentioned to me that SSRIs work on the nigrostriatal system (substantia nigra to striatum or putamen if you will) whereas the MAOIs work in the midbrain (i believe third ventricle but i could be wrong here)...
after thinking about it, i think this may only be referring to their sites of therapeutic action...

in fact, since they go into the blood, they would be both distributed in all the tissues in the body, no?

if "peripheral effects" means "side effects outside of the brain" then, in my personal experience with Parnate, I'd say yes... but the only peripheral effect i had on SSRIs was constipation....
ummm... then again, Parnate does release the hormone testosterone does it not? .. so i guess that would be a peripheral effect (outside of brain), but not one that i would complain about :)

perhaps the removal method of neurotransmitters outside the brain (i'm guessing) is non-existant, since only their metabolites are able to pass through the blood-brain and blood-CSF barrier...
of course this is all very technical, i suppose when you say peripheral nervous system you are referring to the spinal cord ... and i would imagine that the neurons in the spinal cord would have the same regulatory methods as in the brain(synapse uptake+MAOI/COMT) ...

MAO is also in the stomach... actually i believe there are 5HT3 receptors in the stomach too, ... but where the serotonin comes from to trigger them i don't know...

but if you find the answer to any of these questions, please share your knowledge.... :)

cheers
