Interesting thread. Okay, I know cortisol is positively correlated with anxiety and depression. I also know Cushing's is caused by elevated cortisol. So...if you're tested for cortisol and it's high, how do you differentiate between levels indicative of Cushing's disease (if I understand correctly, a pituitary tumor is a common cause) or elevated levels in response to the stress of injury or mood disorder, which might go down if your disorder improves?

And if your high levels are the *cause* and not the result of anxiety and depression, then what besides Cushing's disease (and things like prednisone) can cause it to be constantly high? It seems like the cause and effect relationship between cortisol and anxiety/depression might vary by the individual..?
I guess I'm just wondering how one goes about interpreting results of a 24-hour urine test for cortisol, and knowing when it's just an *indicator* of your stress and when it's something you need to treat in and of itself.

Thanks much,
Emme
