Effexor is less likely to cause weight-gain than SSRIs, according to clinical trials and post-marketing experience. Even if the Effexor does cause weight-gain for you, consider whether the emotional benefit of the drug outweighs the side-effect(s).

Another idea is to treat the obesity pharmacologically with some buproprion: (Diabetes, June 2001 "Buproprion SR Significantly Enhances Weight Loss When Used with a Moderate-Intensity Lifestyle Intervention").
