I have experienced the EXACT same thing! I've been on and off these damn things for about 11 years now. I now have side effects and "conditions" I never had when I started. It seems to be much harder to take these things than when I started. In fact, my doctor is suggesting that I try to live life off of the meds. Of course, I tried this in earnest twice before, and both times were disasters. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do in the future if the meds get to be too much.
