Effexor for residual depression?

Posted by sid on November 28, 2001, at 12:36:38

Hi all,
I've been dealing with depression for years (had 2 major episodes with one year interval), and I have dealt with it through psychotherapy (cognitive, behavioral) and acupunture. Acupuncture made a huge difference for me. I have not had any major depression in about 5 years. However, I seem to be prone to become depressed again (I have to work really hard to stay well), and I cannot say that I have regained my energy level and enjoyment of life that I have once had. I tend to see my current state as "residual depression." I'm OK, but can't help thinking that I am not as well as I could be. I still have difficulties in dealing with stress and it is hard on my relationships, personal as well as professional. At higher levels of stress, I tend to become depressed again.

Given all this, my doctor suggested low-dose long-term Effexor. I started 35.7mg a day yesterday and I am scheduled to see my GP in 3 weeks. Can anyone tell me more about this? Is it a good idea? I must say that after reading other postings about dosage, withdrawal, med mixes, etc., I am rather scared to even try. Clearly I have been scared for a long time since I always resisted taking meds, up til now. I want to make sure I can discuss this with my GP and that I know what to - and not to - expect.

How long term should I expect this treatment to be ? How low a dose should I expect ?
