Under nomal circumstances, platelets (blood particles responsible for clotting) release serotonin at the site of blood vessel tears, leading to further platelet aggregation and vasodilation. This permits sealing of the tear stopping the bleeding. It appears that the SRIs block the reuptake of serotonin into the platelets which leads to decreased serotonin to be released by the platelets into the site of bleeding.

A 19-year-old woman developed spontaneous bruisings on her arms a week after beginning Effexor, 50 mg twice a day. She had no personal or family history of any bleeding disorder nor any medical condition. Her clotting factors and platelet count were noted to be within normal limits. Once Effexor was stopped, her bruisings resolved over 10 days.

I have periods that are light and seem to last forever. I have had light bleeding off and on for @ 3 weeks or so now. Is anyone else noticing a difference in their cycles????

Sunnely:
Thanks for the much-needed info. I have posted several times about apparent problems with effexor and my menstrual cycle. I have had some break-thru bleeding, and a longer and heavier menstrual period (not to mention to lactation problem that I referred to earlier this week). When I first started effexor the last of April, I noticed the spontaneous bruising on my legs (small, but without any injury to cause them). Also, I have knicked myself in the shower shaving my legs and have bled a couple of times much more than normal. What you said has made a lot of sense with regard to these things that have happened to me.
I was previously on Prozac, 20 mg, and had these problems only very mildly. For some reason the effexor does seem to have a stronger serotonin-action on me..even at 225 mg, I find it a little too sedating.
Thanks again for your assistance.
