Hi Scott,

Thanks for posting the website.

I know you're pretty interested in drug-drug interactions and the Cytochrome P450 System. Here's a book (just out the press) I believe you'll be happy to have in your library.

The Cytochrome P450 System: Drug Interaction Principles for Medical Practice (2001). Authors: Kelly L. Cozza, M.D., and Scott C. Armstrong, M.D.

The book is in paperback, 272 pages. I believe it's an excellent quick-reference manual for drug-drug interactions via the CYP450s. It costs $29.95 + postage and handling ($6.95). It is published by American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc.

If interested, you can order via Phone: 1-800-368-5777 or by Fax: 1-202-789-2648 or by Mail: American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc., Attn: Customer Service Dept., PO Box 97250, Washington, DC 20090-7250. You can also order through their website: http://www.appi.org or by E-mail: appi@psych.org All order must be prepaid (check or credit card). You should include the Order # or Item #62000 in your order. Enjoy it.

When you said "I memorized the whole thing. (I wish)." You're not alone. I highly doubt anyone, even the well-known psychopharmacologists, have these things memorized. That is because there are countless drug-drug interactions possibilities via the CYP450 system. FYI, in general, a drug can act as: 1) a substrate for one CYP450 at a time or simultaneously for more than one; 2) both a substrate for a CYP450 and an inhibitor of that same CYP450; 3) an inhibitor of a CYP450 without being a substrate for that enzyme.
Furthermore, even though the ancestral gene for the complex CYP450 system we now know began about 3.5 billion years ago, we are just beginning to learn about it. (Cytochrome P450 was discovered in the liver only about 40 some years ago.) Finally, I won't be surprised that some of what we know now about the CYP450 system may not be true a few years on as the technology (e.g., pharmacogenetics) becomes more sophisticated.
