There was a notorious case in the US involving a young woman named Karen Ann Quinlan who mixed quaaludes with alcohol and wound up in a vegetative coma. There was a big legal fight by her parents to turn off the machines keeping her alive (they won). Anyway, it was a well-known case and scared the heck out of a lot of folks who switched to other tranquilizers, Valuim and Xanax among them.
