In reply to Weight gain from Neurontin and lithium/Cam???, posted by Lin on February 27, 2001, at 11:45:43
Lin - I would hazard a guess that it is the increase in lithium that is responsible for your weight gain, but the Neurontin can possibly causing a little additive weight, as well (not as likely, though). Is it true weight gain or is it perhaps water retention?
I am not sure of the mechanism of lithium weight gain, but it could have to do with increased food intake. If this is a possibility, perhaps keeping a diary of everything you eat could help to determine this. Weight gain with lithium is just one of those trade-off things and usually weight does stabilize after you stabilize on the drug.
Hang in there, but get a second opinion from your doc on the weight gain issue. I'd blame the increase in lithium before I'd blame the Neurontin. Keep up the balanced diet and exercise; they can only help.
Hope this is of some help - Cam
