They won't lie; the worse they can do is fail to provide information or other sources to look up. As you probably know, most French really CAN speak English -- certainly at a major drug company! (And I do I vaguely recall your saying that you can speak French?)

Dear Rick,

I appreciate tremendously your efforts in searching out this information. I may try to call the drug company next week.

I'm not sure, but I think you are the only person who has reported having responded well to Provigil. I know that social anxiety is your major concern, but to what degree had you been depressed? Do you have any impressions about the success rate for treating depression with Provigil from what you have seen? How about adrafinil?

I tried taking Provigil last week. Although I experienced some sort of episodic improvement over the first few days, I did not like the way I felt by the end of the week and discontinued it. I felt more numb than usual and experienced some anxiety along with dull headaches. I hate to discontinue a drug so quickly. I am worried that I have become less likely to "stick it out". It is hard to do so when a drug makes me feel worse instead of better. Within 24 hours after discontinuing the Provigil, I felt more like my usual self.

I really don't know what to do next.

Drug: adrafinil - Olmifon™

Laboratoire L. LAFON
Siège
19, avenue du Pr Cadiot
94701 MAISONS-ALFORT
Tél : 01.49.81.81.00

I found this by going to www.altavista.com and entering "laboratoire l lafon" (with the quotation marks). I think a few of the other sites I came upon included a fax number. They also have a website under construction (no info available yet) at www.lablafon.com. (I THINK that's what the url was!)

A Deja.com usenet search of "adrafinil and liver" turned up about 23 posts which were a mixed bag. Some didn't seem to have a lot of credibility, or had clearly incorrect or mixed-up info. The responses ranged from "scared of it" to a woman who says she felt great on Adrafinil but soon developed yellowing eyes and other problems, to several folks who said they've been taking large doses for years with great success and A-OK liver tests.

Re the latter type of response, while my gut feel is that early detection via quarterly liver tests would catch problems before any damage occurred or became irreversible, I *did* run across something about drug-induced liver damage that said it often shows up unexpectedly after long-term, problem-free treatment. Assumin that's accurate, I wonder if it's true for something as hugely popular as cholesterol-lowering Lipitor, where doctors tend to do close hepatic function monitoring for awhile, followed by less-frequent testing if everything tests OK for awhile. Maybe it depends on the drug.
