CAMatriptyline...Cam

Posted by Phil on May 4, 2000, at 10:54:42

Cam(or others,of course),
My depression is back w/ a vengence and I'm trying to get in to see my pdoc today. I've been through alot of meds over the past 15 years and am trying to decide which way to go.
Seems that Paxil and Ritalin combo was pretty good but apathy was too much.
I'm considering going back to Amitriptyline despite the S/E I experienced; mainly anti-cholinergic. I usually was at a high dose..250 mg or so. The other TCA's haven't seemed to do the trick although I never tried Doxepin at a dose over 25 mg.
What was good about amitrip for me was; I have never slept better in my life and woke up feeling good. And unlike SSRI's or any other AD I've taken, I exercised like crazy! Also managed to quit smoking for a year while taking it.
I'm also considering Remeron but have read that weight gain can be even worse than Amitrip although, right now, I just want to get back to..well, better.
One other question if you've made it this far. Effexor started out as an amazing drug for me but had allergic reaction; itching w/o rash. Generally, is it the drug or the dyes that cause the allergic reactions?
I would guess, more often than not, it's the drug. If it could be the dyes, I might consider XR version.
Thanks for any input and thanks for your generosity to the babble.
