Ambien vs. benzos for insomnia

Posted by Paul on April 8, 2000, at 0:33:11

I occasionally get severe insomnia and have thought about asking my doc for Ambien as opposed to benzos like temazepam or lorazepam, based on my experience with these drugs.

Any benzo-- whether indicated for anxiety, insomnia, seizures, whatever-- I have a tendency to abuse. I can take temazepam at 10am and function throughout the day.

Ambien, on the other hand, is a true hypnotic. I could only take it at night, and a script would be consumed as indicated-- once before bedtime.

Give me a bottle of lorazepam with instructions to take 1 at bedtime and it will last a week at the most.

I hate this but that's the way I am. Would a doc be receptive to this line of reasoning, i.e., reasoning based on my tendency to abuse?
