Great link Phil. This is such a big problem for many people I think. For me, it's not just about being worried that I would be fired, it's about privacy, and not having to go in and say "Sorry I missed work last week, I OD'd and almost died. I'm fine now."

I did lose one of my part time jobs last year for having too many absences related to mental illness. As usual, I kept closed about the details of my health problems to maintain my privacy, and was let go. I wonder, if my absences were from a "real" illness, would I still work there?

I had an issue one day. told my boss i was going to a psych ward for a suicide attempt. i don't know what i was doing but dying was never on my mind. i needed time off from working at the state of texas. sucked. i hated everyday for ten years but stayed for low pay but great benefits. pitiful. the state can't screw with you because if they fire you they know you'll be back with a lawyer. so years later i was laid off with 20 other people. the day before i had a great review. wtf? my doc said, hard to prove it now. i was in psych 4 days. loved it. i did. i don't want a second trip. once was still enough.

Wow, can I identify with this. I've said I have a bad headache or ate something that disagreed with me when it's a full blown panic attack.
