The US government failed to pass a budget resolution, so government agencies have shutdown. Over 800,000 federal workers were told to go home without pay. Of course, this has affected many more people whose businesses rely on government contracts. On October 17, another deadline must be met. The government must ratify an increase in the debt ceiling so that it can actually pay its bills, including the amount it owes in interest on its debts. Such a situation can result in default. Were this to occur, the economic consequences would eclipse anything the government shutdown could produce.

I know in VA Beach that a lot of friends are not out of work. Those that held government jobs. My news letter just announced also the NIMH has furloughed so for instance no new people or new trials for meds of any sort will begin. Also some programs for children have been furloughed. The flu will not be tracked as in the past either. So far regular docs and medicaire is still running. I have the article will post for informational purposes only on the meds board since the flu and clinical trials are a big part. Phillipa

The republicans oppose the affordable healthcare act (aka obamacare) and Obama, and they're trying to force it out.

This is unbelievable. When I first heard of this I honestly thought it was some kind of joke....

How can the government "shut down?" wtf?

Kind of glad I live in Canada.

Why?

(I mean, seriously, though it is a ridiculous question. Whitlam brought this in here just after 72, so I speak from that perspective. Life is difficult enough here to be an instructive moral lesson. Or is it? Plainly ridiculous. It's the beer, it's Saturday afternoon.)

The public one too, not the privatised version.

It is quite incredible to me too, as a Canadian living here. I feel as if I've been transported to Europe, except it doesn't end. At least they have the decency to shut down one day at a time in the form of a protest. This is more like posturing. I can't think of any one person I know who thinks this is a great idea (and who doesn't blame one side over the other).
It is quite embarrassing.

I think this is a ridiculous way to oppose something. Congress members are still "working" and getting paid, I think they should take mandatory furloughs like many other Federal employees (she says sarcastically, like that'll happen.)

Today I read that a local food pantry may have a shortage starting in November because people receiving food assistance funds may not get them so they'll need more food from emergency food sources. Oh, wait this is the U.S.A. nobody goes hungry here, and we all have great healthcare (she again says dripping with sarcasm.)

That great American from Australia, his favourite candidate in the last Republican Primaries, he said that food stamps were like Mussolini. Mr Murdoch has been a poor influence! Ethically. Best not to say to much about him. Isn't that why the politics of the English speaking world is........??

Obamacare will be (and is) a complete disaster. It makes zero economic sense to be implementing such a law at a time when the US can do nothing but print and borrow more money from China.

I'm all for the shut down. How can nobody dig in their heels to try and prevent such a monstrosity?

The US is reaching the end of its era. Obama doubled the national debt. Although he claims to have reduced the deficit this is largely a result of artificially supressed interest rates through so called 'quantitative easing'. Retiring Baby boomers will be taxing the system beyond belief in the next few decades. This is simply not the time to be handing out more entitlements. The US needs a *slash and burn* approach to economic revitalization.

They always make sure they spend the money on something useful first, like wars of choice.

Ah, so it's not just me who sees this as the result of the end of yellow dog democrats (i.e. Southern Conservative). It led to polarization in both parties. :(

Drat. That was going to be my thesis should I ever return to school in any remotely associated field.

Shame on me for answering on "Social".

No cause for shame. Redirecting this thread to Psycho-Babble Politics is a good idea. Here's a link:

Please feel free to continue this discussion there; this isn't a thread shutdown. :-)
