Shingles snuck up on me AGAIN

Posted by Partlycloudy on August 7, 2013, at 7:25:34

Stupid shingles. Stupid PC.
I have been feeling really run down and stressed having our kitchen remodeled. Incessant noise, the dust, extra people in the house, and I'm not so good at getting away from it all.

Spent the last couple of days just craving sleep. It couldn't be satisfied. Woke up this morning with a familiar blister in an uncomfortable place. Itches like the worst mosquito bite. It's shingles.

I am lucky in that I have a VERY mild case. Just a few blisters that linger forever. The vaccine for it, though, is outrageously expensive if you are under 65.

Heading for the calamine lotion.

:-(

Hi PC,

They're probably triggered by the stress of the remodeling.

I had them five years ago and still bear the scars from scratching off the scabs. Also, as you know you just want to sleep because your body is burning all its energy fighting the virus.

I hope it stays mild. My doctor told me the vaccine would make future cases more mild, but wouldn't prevent them. She wouldn't give it to me because I was under 60 and it hasn't been tested on anyone younger.

I feel for you.

I always feel so dumb whenI have had a breakout because it's like slamming your head against the wall. Of course I would get shingles! My kitchen has a fridge and a microwave in it. Sleeping, mild and nagging headache, you think I would know my body better.
It's only been going on for 20 years. But the interval is something like every 3 years or so.
I feel silly.

Phil, just like you to reach out when you've got something serious going on for yourself. I am sleeping a lot, and slathering calamine lotion.

Great to know that it's with me for ever.
I'm just bumming.

Hmmm...

My doctor gave me a prescription for the vaccine, to be filled at Walgreens. I haven't gotten around to getting it, or discovering the cost. :(

If you are under the age of 65 (in FL), it is $165. No insurance plan that I know of covers it yet. Maybe Obamacare changed that, but this was the case a couple years ago when it last happened to me.

Oh yes, :-(

But I am enjoying the extra sleep...

I should probably bestir myself to check out the price. I have been practically hibernating lately, trying to avoid some stressful life situations. And probably because of the heat. I feel like I'm slogging through quicksand.

A co-worker recently had shingles, and I was reminded how painful they can be. I hope yours are over soon. Would the vaccine be helpful if you already had them?

Considering how mild my outbreaks are (they have been disputed until a close examination of the small blister cluster proved the suspicion), I think it may be some peddling of snake oil in my case.
Time, however, will tell.
