John Lennon, 30 years ago today...Imagine.

Posted by Free on December 8, 2010, at 20:30:23

I don't know what I was doing exactly, probably playing...

But I remember people crying.

Rest in peace, John.

I was informed yesterday that the FBI and CIA had been watching John and his murder may have been Government. I never knew that and was saddened to see it on another site. And googled it and is true. John Lennon was an idol of mine. I was home and snow began to fall when announced on TV. Phillipa

It's a crazy world we live in isn't it? I hope it isn't true.

Yeah, he was one of music's greatest...classic and timeless. He is an irreplaceable loss to the music world.

I sure hope it's not true Lennon is an all time favorite. My early adulthood was nothing but Beetles and John Lennon. Very sad when he was shot. Phillipa

I'm not sure if I'm right in thinking that this song is about an acid trip that John Lennon had with Neil Young? Good song, anyway.

Not Neil Young, but Peter Fonda.

There was so much great music then, Phillipa. It must have been a blast to have been a young lady during such an exciting era in music... You must have lots of memories attached to Beatles and Lennon's songs.

I've never heard about this.

Thanks, Sig. This is great stuff.

Can you imagine being there? I would have been over the moon...omg.

Fonda wrote for Rolling Stone magazine:
I finally made my way past the kids and the guards. Paul and George were on the back patio, and the helicopters were patrolling overhead. They were sitting at a table under an umbrella in a rather comical attempt at privacy. Soon afterwards we dropped acid and began tripping for what would prove to be all night and most of the next day; all of us, including the original Byrds, eventually ended up inside a huge, empty, sunken tub in the bathroom, babbling our minds away.

I had the privilege of listening to the four of them sing, play around and scheme about what they would compose and achieve. They were so enthusiastic, so full of fun. John was the wittiest and most astute. I enjoyed just hearing him speak and there were no pretensions in his manner. He just sat around, laying out lines of poetry and thinking an amazing mind. He talked a lot yet he still seemed so private.

It was a thoroughly tripped-out atmosphere because they kept finding girls hiding under tables and so forth: one snuck into the poolroom through a window while an acid-fired Ringo was shooting pool with the wrong end of the cue. "Wrong end?" hed say. "So what f*ckin difference does it make?"

It sounds weird, doesn't it?'

The helicopters, the California sun, the acid.

Yeah... Now that you mention it. lol.

But I like weird things. I'm fascinated by it, and feel at "home" with all things weird.

Did you read this part though?

For a closet musician/artist like myself, it's pure heaven. This is my kind of gathering...

Lol! You are hilarious and spot-on, Sig.

Ringo's right about holding the wrong end...

Really, what f*ckin difference does it make? lol.

I was serious when I said that too.

It makes you aware of what matters and what does not.

Really? Sounds like a nice side effect. I've never tried it.

Didn't Gordon Liddy have some elaborate plan to make Ellsberg look crazy
by slipping some in his soup?

He was (almost?) sent to jail a while back?

I read a very amusing transcript of a conversation between him and his (shall we say) ADC in Harpers.

Those were the days, huh, Phillipa? I bet people were much freer then.
Maybe more organic, and less high-tech and paranoid?

Sounds like you've got some spicy memories. :)

Greenwich must have been amazing at that time...

I didn't know Brian Eno made music like this. The only album I have of his is Ambient - Music for Airports
(his brilliant effort to elevate the quality of music in airports:)).

Wow, his earlier work is psychedelic and "groovy". I like it!

This is really great stuff! And it's all "NEW" (to me).

You're broadening my music palate...which is the best kind of present for someone like myself.

Thank you so much, Sig. I love it! :)

Oh, and I also love the thread title "Surrender To The Void". It's quite beautiful and apropos...
