Groundhog ate my pumpkin!

Posted by Deneb on July 23, 2010, at 4:14:13

I'm growing pumpkins in the yard and they are my babies. LOL

First I thought I would have a lot of pumpkins as a whole bunch came up, but all but one turned orange, died and dropped off! I'm thinking that the insecticide I sprayed on them killed the bees and prevented pollination or something.

Well I have one pumpkin growing and it wasn't until recently that more female flowers popped up. Three pumpkins started growing and they were growing big fast so I was optimistic that they will turn out.

Then a stupid groundhog ate one of my pumpkins! It will surely come back for the others tomorrow! Darn you groundhog! (shakes fist angrily in air) ROFL

I'm going to go to Home Depot today to see if I can fashion some kind of protective cover for my pumpkins.

Does anyone have any tips on keeping wild life out of the garden?

The groundhogs are cute, but my pumpkins are my babies! lol

I'd be interested in hearing what you come up with.

I'd like to grow tomatoes and cucumbers and herbs.

Fencing!

And while it's too late in the year to start more pumpkins you could probably still plant something fast like zucchini (which groundhogs also like!).

Ahhh! The groundhog ate all my pumpkins!

I just went to Home Depot yesterday to get some wire fencing and planned to put it up this morning. I woke up late (but still early for me) but it was too late!

I have no pumpkins now. LOL

Ah well, there is next year...

I'll be ready for you groundhog!

I hope my pumpkin plant grows more pumpkins.

My Mom took in one of the half eaten pumpkins and cut away the bit portions. We have 3/4th of a pumpkin now. LOL

Will a half eaten pumpkin ripen? LOL

Gardening. Suddenly I have tomatoes! » Deneb

I went out this evening and suddenly there are a bunch of ripe cherry tomatoes. And tons more in the pipeline. I THINK there are more then the local critters can consume. Of course that's what I thought last year only to discover that they were only waiting for them to get perfectly ripe too.

How are your pumpkins doing?

Neat! I hope the squirrels leave some tomatoes for you!

My two pumpkins are doing fine. One is a lot smaller than the other one, but both seem healthy. They are both very green now.

The cages I've made for them are working well to protect them from the groundhog.

I saw the groundhog in my pumpkin patch the other day! It looked around, saw that it couldn't get to the pumpkins and left. :-)
