40 long years

Posted by Toph on June 28, 2010, at 16:40:44

I went to my 40th high school reunion at the considerable prompting of some of my old friends. I actually had a good time. At the 20th reunion I found people still wrapped up in the cliques and that whole judgemental thing that I don't do so well with. So I had a lot of anxiety about this event. There were about 300 people there, and considering the incidence of major mental illness estimated at 6%, I figure about 17 other people there had CMI like me. I couldn't tell though, unless it was that lady who kept letting her hair fall into the food on the buffet. I think people must get nicer in their old age. I was hugged by women I didn't recognize and most people laughed at my jokes instead of getting offended. Hell, even my wife liked hearing stories about old girlfriends and the crazy stuff my pals and I used to do together. Going to these public functions was kind of a risk but it was worthwhile in the end. Not really a big deal, but another sort of rite of passage accomplished.

I'm glad you had a good time. :)

I suppose eventually most people grow up, and drop the cliques? Or maybe just grow far enough from their friends that the distinction is no longer as important.
