I saw two recent movies + enjoyed them!

Posted by floatingbridge on January 12, 2010, at 20:11:37

So, there are glimmers of normalacy in my Eeyore-ish world.

District Nine, a sci-fi social commentary of sorts. Fairly low-budget w/ unknown actors. The type of sci-fi I like, like 28 days later

No Country for Old Men. The Cohen brothers may have their ups and downs, but the cinematography is always fine.

At my worst, I can't listen to music, read, watch t.v or film.

:-)

Glad you're feeling better. I know what you mean about not being able to listen to music, etc. when things are really bad. I'm that way too.

No Country for Old Men was pretty disturbing, though I did like it. That's the Cohen bros. for you, I guess. Have not seen the other one.

I saw 2 distinctly strange and unusual films. I like films I don't fully understand.
They were "Inland Empire" and "Synechdoche"

I must keep an eye out for District 9.

I have taken all morning to turn on the radio on occasion. After a few hours it comes to me that 'I can do this!', and then I enjoy the fruits of my labour.

Have I seen it? Let's see.

Janejane, yeah, their movies can be. I never saw Miller's Crossing. I admit to adoring Fargo and Blood Simple. Also their sleeper The Man Who Wasn't There.

Gotta be in the mood. Any flicks you like?

I haven't seen all their movies, but have enjoyed pretty much everything I have seen, most recently Burn After Reading (definitely recommend). The Big Lebowski is probably my favorite, though. Raising Arizona had a lot of great moments too. Haven't seen The Man Who Wasn't There.

I really don't go out to see movies much though sometimes catch something on TV. I'm really quite a homebody. Maybe we can start a thread about favorite TV shows. That might be another fun topic that'll get us away from too much depression talk. (Worry about focusing on it too much sometimes, though when it's bad, it's really difficult to focus on anything else.)

How many times have I seen "Happiness"?

Quite a few.

I really like Phillip Seymore Hoffman.

Is it a comedy. He's quite an actor--I remember him in The Talented Mr. Ripley. Seems excellent at portraying conflicted pain.

Oh, I remember--I think that's a movie my husband loves. Not a comedy, and wasn't sure my depressive state could handle hat much psychic unease.

Want to see The Hurt Locker.

Now that was a disturbing film. I wonder what that says about us.

Hi Sigi,

Last Lynch film I saw was Blue Velvet--in the theater--so that dates me. No, wait. Have you ever seen the film he made for Disney? The. Straight Story. I love it. That and Eraser Head. So how weird is Inland Empire?

And Synechdoche? I'll ask my husband.

Burn After Reading? I must live under a rock. First I've heard of it. I'll look it up.

I didn't find it disturbing.
I wonder what that says about me.
(although the psychiatrist/kid scene, welllllll...)

My favourite scene is where Joy goes back to the Russian to pick up the guitar he has stolen. She notices her sound system there. She asks for her guitar back. He seems doubtful.
'I need a thousand dollars'.
'I only have 600'.
'That'll do'
'Can I have my guitar?'
'OK'
or something like that.

>So how weird is Inland Empire?

Much harder to follow than Mulholland Drive?

You've not seen that?

But similar inasmuch as the scenes are superficially extremely straightforward and vivid.

It has a wonderful scene where a negro street woman is sitting with someone (who?) and she says 'Ah, you's dying is all'.

Like Inland Empire, Palindromes was said by reviewers to be self indulgent.
It had me in stitches though....it cheers me up just to hear someone (the pedophile!) say

Ah, to be mindlessly happy....

Thanks for the clip. Hadn't heard of this one either.

28 days later. Have you seen Twenty Eight Weeks Later? (I have not.)

And The Children of Men?

Neither as cerebral--rather visceral.

OMG I can really go on about films. Yikes! I better stop here.

>Ah, to be mindlessly happy

Nice idea, when did you have it?

I haven't seen either of 28 Days later nor 28 Weeks Later.

Being an old fashioned type (prone to nostalgia) I like 70s European movies with prayers like this and shots of a room with nothing happening that last 10 minutes (you can go to sleep!)

> from Cries and Whispers
Agnes has died young after a painful illness, and this prayer is said over her body......
"God, our Father, in His infinite wisdom and mercy has decided to call you home in the flower of your youth. You submitted to it patiently and uncomplainingly in the certain knowledge your sins would be forgiven through the death on the cross of your Lord, Jesus Christ. May your Father in Heaven have mercy on your soul when you step into his presence. May he let his angels disrobe you of the memory of your earthly pain."
(The chaplain now addresses Agnes's spirit.)
"If it is so that you have gathered our suffering in your poor body, if it is so that you have borne it with you through death, if it is so that you meet God over there in the other land, if it is so that He turns His face toward you, if it is so that you can speak the language this God understands, if it is so that you can speak to this God. If it is so, pray for us. Agnes, my dear child, listen to what I am now telling you. Pray for us who are left here on this dark and dirty earth under an empty and cruel Heaven. Lay your burden of suffering at God's feet, and ask Him to pardon us. Ask Him to free us at last from our anxiety, our weariness and our deep doubt. Ask Him for a meaning to our lives. Agnes, you who have suffered so uncomplainingly and so long, you must be worthy to plead our cause."

I wonder if he laughed himself sick over that?

I meant Bergman.

I heard him interviewed maybe 10 years ago, with his lead actor.

They were both very dry, very funny.

Is the interview available? I'd love to hear it.

It was on ABC or SBS here. It was an hour long and consisted solely of an extended interview with Bergman and a man who had played the leading role in many of his films.

If I knew who that was it would be easier to find.
