Telemarketers or scam artists

Posted by Deneb on October 8, 2009, at 17:47:50

This annoying automated message keeps calling us about having won a vacation somewhere. Usually I just hang up or press 2 to decline the offer, but it never stops the calls so today I pressed 1 to speak with a representative. I got through to a real live person after pressing 1 a few times and I said asked to please be taken off the list. Then there was silence. They guy hung up on me! Now I don't even know if they took my number off the list. I think they are a scam.

I used to work for market research firm and whenever someone said they wanted to be taken off the list, we were required to say that we would take care of it and thank them for their time.

So annoying! I can't even report them because I don't know who they are. I have my number on the Do Not Call list, which should apply to them because they are selling something, but for some reason these calls still get through.

I wish we could screen our calls. If it were up to me, I'd have all calls routed to the answering machine first before I pick up. My parents wouldn't like that though.

So anyone else super annoyed by these telemarketers? I am used to being on the other end of many of these hang ups and I am still annoyed. LOL

Oh neat, I just found this really useful video about how to stop telemarketers! They teach you how to gather evidence and sue scam artists.

I get some kind of stupid calls at my job where there's a foghorn sound, then some spiel about having won a cruise. It startles & annoys me every time.

Yes, I particularly get annoyed when I get up & answer the phone & there's nobody there!

My phone shows the numbers of callers, so I always phone the number back. Quite often, they have an automated message saying that if you wish to be taken off the list, & then it give you instructions.

If your phone shows the numbers who call, you could try this maybe?

It really tees me off to answer the phone & then nobody is there. I think they have automatic dialing & whoever answers first gets connected.

Deneb, I think telemarketers are really annoying. They hassle people and seem to have poor people skills either that or they are just manipulative and insensitive. Angela2

If it is any consolation, I kept getting calls for ions and one of the selections was "press 3 to be removed from this list". The calls continued for months even though I was pressing 3. I still now get calls about remorgaging my home (I rent an apt and have never owne a house), about renewing my car warranty (I bought my car used from someone I know, it is a 1997 and did not come with a warranty!) and other calls of such ilk.

Yeah, the place I worked at, people could call back and then be put on our Do Not Call List.

The only problem is, I don't have call display.

I don't know how it works with the scam artists, but I know market research interviewers aren't trained in people skills.

Yeah, these calls are so annoying. Pressing the option to be removed probably does nothing but confirm to them that a real live person is on the other line.

Someone told me to just hang up and not press anything because once you press something, they know this is a good number to call.
