Sweet tea, a southern phenomenon

Posted by Phil on August 31, 2009, at 6:15:07

Heaven in a glass. Blood sugar booster. Instant diabetes. Ah, sweet tea.

Seems all the ff places have sweet tea now. Tea with pounds of sugar.

My tastebuds have changed recently and Diet Dr Peppers taste terrible. I used to drink 6 a day.
I'm not what some call a health freak.

I think the tea, along w/ 3 cups of coffee in the a.m. is contributing to the short fuse I have these days. lol

I never used sugar in tea but this sweet tea is awesome and keeps me from eating several Snickers a day, etc.

I'm lol right now. That's enuff. lmao

I can't handle the stuff - too much sweet medicine for me! But I make my own unsweetened with an - get this - Iced Tea Maker I bought years ago at Kmart. Perfect for the cheap person that I am.

I drink at least four diet Dr. Peppers a day. Not so good for me, but they contain caffeine, right?

I've never gotten used to the taste of tea. I have a tea maker, and make it with lots of artificial sweetener, but even then I have trouble drinking it. Daddy would put so much sugar in his that it would reach saturation point and the excess sugar would pool at the bottom. It was ice tea syrup. And he never got fat, even though he drank tea and coffee syrup, and lots of alcohol, and ate whatever he liked. I used to be like that, pre meds and pre pregnancy...

I love freshly brewed iced tea (but only mildly sweetened). McDonald's used to have the best, it was never stale. Then they switched to Lipton pre-made cr*p.

I can't believe when places will serve you iced tea that's obviously several days old. It's disgusting. But then again, consider what passes for coffee in lots of places. Can't people accept that coffee and tea have a definite half-life?

So, sweet tea.........is it listed like that on the menu?

Is it regular tea just with lots of sugar?

Do you put milk/cream in it?

My very best favourite drink is Tim Horton's 'steeped tea', which I have with 3 creams & 1 1/2 sugars. Yum. I swear they must put something else in it, as I'm hooked on it!!

It's usually listed on the menu as "sweetened tea" and it's served on ice. It's fantastic.

I've never heard of it being served with cream, but I love it with lemon. Mint or peach sweet tea is also really good.

The "cracker barrel" restaurant chain has really good sweet tea.

Seldom

I'm so addicted to sweet tea right now. Do you notice sometimes when you change meds, your tastes changes.

I've been addicted to Diet Dr Peppers for YEARS. They taste horrible now..Cokes too. Can't drink them.

TEA FOR ME. Make it sweet, sugar. : )

If I repeat myself, if I repeat myself, it's because I'm old.

I grew up on sweet tea, but of course, it was just called TEA. Because, who drinks unsweetened tea??? But I've since become used to unsweetened tea, because of the zero calories, and now sweet tea from anywhere is UNBELIEVABLY sweet! Even if I get it half sweet and half unsweet its still too sweet. As for milk or creamer, I think that's a hot tea thing. Kath may not realize we're referring to strictly iced tea, as she's up there where its cold all the time! ;-)

I go through phases of liking Dr. Pepper, but I've never liked Diet DP. In fact, I hate all Diet sodas (or cokes, as they're all called here). But I like tea with artificial sweetener - go figure! Sometimes there's nothing like an iced tea with sugar and lemon though. Serve it up with a pot of beans, some fried potatoes and corn bread, and its nostalgia city!

~ ~ As kids, my cousins & I were allowed "milky tea". VERY white with so much sugar that there was a lovely syrup on the bottom that one could eat with a spoon after drinking the tea! ~ ~

~ ~ Sometimes I'll try tea with no sugar (I love cream in tea). If it is really hot - that is, if I drink it right away while it's hot, & put myself in a certain mind set, I can enjoy it. ~ ~

~ ~You're right! I didn't know that. And Hey - it's not Always cold up here! But this summer sure hasn't been a hot one, although we had a few days in the 30's C or around 90 F in late August. ~ ~

~ ~ Do you call them all 'cokes'? We only call Coca Cola 'coke'. We call the others "pop".

NOW for the heretical suggestion that my daughter made to me:

Stop having caffeine. Oh My Gawd.

The weird thing is that I'm actually, Gently considering it. My tea-addict is screeching at me though! LOL
