Darkness 11/11, by Van Der Graaf Generator

From the lyrics....
'Bless the baby born today,
flying in pitch, flying on fear.'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNtdRtz59O8

Here are the lyrics...

Day dawns dark, it now numbers infinity.
Life crawls from the past, watching in wonder
I trace its patterns in me.
Tomorrow's tomorrow is birth again.
Boats burn the bridge in the fens;
the time of the past returns to my life
and uses it.

Don't blame me for the letters that may form in the sand;
don't look in my eyes, you may see all the numbers
that stretch in my sky and colour my hand.
Don't say that I'm wrong in imagining
that the voice of my life cannot sing.
Fate enters and talks in old words:
They amuse it.

The hands shine darkly and white: only in dark they appear.
Bless the baby born today,
flying in pitch, flying on fear.

They shine in my eyes and touch my face
where I have seen them placed before;
don't blame me, please, for the fate that falls:
I did not choose it.
I did not, no no, I did not
I truly did not choose it.

"Everyone has a song,
that's how we know who we are."

This is a song by Robbie Robertson. He formed a group called "The Band". They played with Bob Dylan first and then struck out on their own. Robbie Robertson disbanded the group in the 80s and came out with his first single album. For me it is the single most important album during the 80s...this song is about the people who stake their lives on fame. And, of course, we have a large amount of responsibility here.

"American Roulette"

He was born in the belly of the country
Over east of Eden
Confused by the big city blues
He didn't know whose life he's leading
Put yourself behind the wheel
See if you can get that feel
Move faster by night
Move faster by night
The windows were all shattered
And the body was all battered

American Roulette
Stake your life upon it
American Roulette
Same eyes, same eyes
American Roulette

Take that body and put him in a mansion
Paint the window black
Give him all the women that he wants
Put a monkey on his back
All of your so called friends
Take you where the sidewalk ends
Can't sleep at night
Can't sleep at night
Lord please save his soul
He was the king of Rock and Roll

American Roulette
Stake your life upon it
American Roulette
Same eyes, same eyes
American Roulette

They said she didn't have a chance in hell
For the American Dream
There's a thousand young blondes out there
Trying to make it to the silver screen
She had the walk, the look, the talk
That shook the world (Read about it)
Some like it hot
Some like it cool
Too much to her to handle
Another scandal, she burnt the candle

American Roulette
Stake your life upon it
American Roulette
Same eyes, same eyes
American Roulette

Say a prayer for the lost generation
Who spin the wheel out of desperation

American Roulette
Stake your life upon it
American Roulette
Same eyes, same eyes
American Roulette

I think this was written by Carol King and David Geffen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M597-6lhKrg

Oh I'd rather go and journey where the diamond crest is flowing and
Run across the valley beneath the sacred mountain and
Wander through the forest
Where the trees have leaves of prisms and break the light in colors
That no one knows the names of

And when it's time I'll go and wait beside a legendary fountain
Till I see your form reflected in it's clear and jewelled waters
And if you think I'm ready
You may lead me to the chasm where the rivers of our vision
Flow into one another

I will want to die beneath the white cascading waters
She may beg, she may plead, she may argue with her logic
And then she'll know the things I learned
That really have no value in the end she will surely know
I wasn't born to follow

I didn't know you liked Roy Orbison.

How long ago was it that I heard this?

He always makes me think of beaches and people lying in the sun and the blue sea in the distance. The world was so light then.

I guess you already know that Roy Orbison and Bruce Springsteen appeared on stage together (with numerous other musicians) to produce a concert called "Black and White Night". PBS plays it frequently.

The PBS concert is breathtaking. Beautiful music and friends with Roy Orbison. I've seen it twice and would watch it again in a heartbeat. Bonnie Raitt, K.D. Lang and another lady on backup. Fantastic show. Tom Waitts!!

My youngest daughter walked down the aisle to this song.

We found a fantastic duo in Albuquerque to play the guitar and violin. It was beautiful. (She was beautiful also..even though we were outside and drizzle was falling)

No, I'd never heard of that.

I did enjoy Roy singing in 'The Traveling Willberries', not long before he died.

Just wonderful, Pat.

It was only more recently that many of us, I'm sure, realised how much we had loved that America and how much we missed it.
