if you've ever been there in the summer--you'd know the difference---treacherous weather indeed.

I lied.

It was not 34C today.

It was 28C.

My son said that things got serious when it was -30C.

However, on a night with that temperature they had a fireworks display on the mountain, and there were people there in just shirts, in (admittedly) a crowd of a few thousand.

Ya, Kath, the very first thought that came to mind as I stepped outside yesterday was concern for homeless people. I sure hope that nobody got stuck out there.

My second thought was squeaky snow. I hate walking on squeaky snow. It is second only to fingernails on a blackboard for me.

On the other hand, the extensive cold is making for a good ice road season. Last year's sucked, and they ended up having to fly in fuel and food and such to many remote communities, at exorbitant expense. This year, everything should go very smoothly.

Yes, 'tis true. They have cold weather alerts on TV...."Exposed flesh can freeze within 15 minutes"

If there's any wind, it's much worse. Thankfully, it was pretty still yesterday.

Ya, rub it in, Bobby. ;-)

I don't know if you've heard the term Snowbirds, but it refers to Canadians who head south in the winter to escape the cold. I am making plans to become one. The part I haven't figured out yet is my semi-permanent destination.

In a couple of years, my kids will pretty much be independent, and I can make my move.

Hi Kath,

Shelters here (Milwaukee) that normally only help the homeless during the daytime are staying open 24 hours.

All babblers in the freeze zone, stay warm.

A radio show said a lot of weather channels were closing and the ones on the air were in cities and temps were warmer there. Course the radio channel jokes a lot never know what real.

You love what you don't have, I guess.

I loved those scenes in the Benjamin Button movie that were set in Murmansk in 1939, which, it has to be said, is a pretty cold place in a particularly scary time....but I thought it was lovely.

No worries mate, I can make up the difference. The last two days have cracked 40C at my place. How hot? Damnnnnnnnnn hot! Though I didn't feel nearly so bad when they said on the news that Ivanhoe topped 45 or 46 on Wednesday - now that's obnoxious.

Damos!

Good to see you, mate.

40 does kind of suck, especially with humidity. No way to cool off. I think if it weren't for A/C, I'd live underground in summer.

I found a Fahrenheit to Celsius converter so I can know what the heck yall are talking about!

http://www.wbuf.noaa.gov/tempfc.htm

So now I can say... Whoa, 40! That's like Texas weather! And 46, that's like hot TX weather!

Yesterday it got to 61F/16C here, but today its supposed to get down to 25F/-3C! That's just too freaking cold - for me anyway!

All I know is that I live in the southern US and right know it is -5C, predicted to go to -14C tonight.

My poor southern belle self is about to freeze to the very spot on which her antebellum bottom sits!

Brrr.

Seldom.

So that stuff about a cold Kentucky morning is really so.

We have a spread between the lowest to the highest temperatures over the year of around 30C, which I imagine to be half of that in many places of the world.

Usually, our winters consist of sweater weather. We may have a month (or less) with lows near freezing, but this kind of cold is very unusual.

It's also supposed to last more than one night! Brrr!

Despite the apparent risk of harm to your belle self, I could not help but smile at your depiction of the situation.

We Canucks have a traditional method of dealing with such a circumstance, lighting a fire in a fireplace. I've never owned a house without one. Soothing, too. S'mores potential, also.

BTW, what does an Eskimo get from sitting on the ice?

Polaroids.

I'd expect at least 70 Celcius range in any given year, perhaps another ten in an exceptional year.

You must be near the ocean, yes?

Yep, but it's something else as well.
I think the east coast of the North American landmass would have greater variation?
I suspect Shanghai would. They have (had) snow there in winter (I have read), and it's the same latitude as Sydney.

I may or may not have been aquainted with snowbirds and may or may not have shared some rum punch in bamboo cups while talking politics over a spliff--but if I did--I'd say they have funny French accents--almost as funny as mine.
