I hope I haven't killed my dog :(

Posted by jammerlich on January 1, 2009, at 21:49:20

Seriously. She's spending the night at the emergency vet.

I came home to find she'd gotten a jar of Nutella off a tray table, chewed the lid off, and eaten almost the whole thing. The vet said that it was a near lethal, if not lethal, amount for a dog her size. They started with a dose of valium to calm her (can I have some, too?) and then she's in for charcoal, IV fluids, and multiple EKGs to keep an eye on her heart....plus anything they have to do if the heart becomes an issue. There was other stuff on the list, too. I just can't remember it all right now.

Needless to say I am sick with worry and furious with myself. What an idiot.

I'm so sorry Jammer. That's like having a sick child --and I can only imagine the distress you're in. I hope you don't blame yourself--I've never heard of Nutela being a danger to dogs. and even if I had heard---I would never in a million years think to put a closed container out of reach. It's just one of those freak accidents. Honestly--I don't want to sound the least bit insensitive---but please don't let the vet take you for a ride by ordering a gazillion tests and racking up crazy bills unnecessarily by preying on your emotions. I say this with some degree of knowledge in the field. vets have bills to pay just like the rest of us--and in hard times- are not above being creative in generating revenues. Please---I'm not saying not to try anything to save your dog--I'm just saying be aware my friend. You are no where near an idiot!! Saying a doggie prayer right now.

Thanks, Bobby, I really appreciate your concern. Rest assured, though, that the vet isn't taking me for a ride. Nutella is largely chocolate and chocolate is toxic for dogs. Thankfully, I was aware of that, otherwise I might not have taken her in.

I called a bit ago to check on her and they said the valium they'd given her an hour and a half earlier had done nothing for her and she was still very agitated. I could hear her barking in the background. It was the distressed "Hey, Mom, you forgot me" bark she uses when she's been closed in a room or left outside. Poor baby.

Wow, who would have thought she could chew through the lid! I'm sending healing vibes to her! What's her name?

Bobby is right, its not your fault, its just a freak accident. But I know it will be hard not to blame yourself.

I hope she's going to be okay! Be sure and let us know!

I hope she'll be OK Jammer. Bobby and TexasChic are right, it was an accident. I didn't even know Nutella was made of chocolate.

Charcoal smoothie is not as bad as it sounds.

I'm SO sorry to hear about Maddie, as I know she was dear to your heart, and a real sweetie pie. Seriously, who would have been able to anticipate that a dog would 1) be interested in Nutella 2) find the jar of nutella 3) work on that jar enough to get into the contents?

This is very much a freak accident, and I don't want you to blame yourself.

Crossing my fingers for a swift recovery. (((((Maddie)))))

Me too, jammer.

My doggie got really bad colitis from eating a dead frog outside on of our walks. I thought she was just smelling something very intently, but she was eating it.

I know how you feel, my dog was in bad shape. Keep us posted.

Good thoughts your way.

Seldom.

It happens to all of us, Jammer. You didn't leave it open on the table, and it wouldn't have occurred to me that a twelve year old dog would grab a closed jar and chew the lid off.

I'll be sending good thoughts her way. And your way too. I know how rotten it feels.

It was just a tragic accident.

Our regular vet thought the ideal thing would be to leave her with him all day so they could administer fluids, however, we were told she completely flipped out at the emergency center. Constant barking and pacing and a nose bleed (probably from anxiety), despite two doses of valium. So, I get to keep her at home and will call him if anything happens. She seems comfortable and, thankfully, will probably be OK.

A big THANK YOU to everyone for your kind words and well wishes.

Now, I think we both need to hit the sack. I'm pretty sure neither of us slept last night.

Hi Jammer:

I am sorry you and your dog had to go through with what you did. Glad you guys are both alright. I know what it is like with my little dog, and it's like they are our little kids. Just glad you love your dog the way you do, because there are all of the horrid stories of terror people inflict on their animals. Hope you are feeling better, because what happened was an accident, and it can happen to anyone.

Best,
Jay

You were very wise in taking her to the vet. The little rascals can get into pretty much anything they want to..if they have enough time.

I am so grateful that you and Maddie are home now..safe and sound!
