My first (and last) marathon

Posted by no_rose_garden on December 7, 2008, at 17:57:14

Today...I ran really slow, but ran the whole thing. I think it's a good thing to do if you like that kind of thing. My feet hurt.

It was a little depressing at the finish, though b/c everybody had their family and friends cheering for them and profusely congratulating them. I don't really have anybody like that, so I felt sort of bad.

I think I just wanted to tell you guys b/c you're the closest thing to friends I have I think.

Also, the buses got changed and the bus stops said the bus stops were closed for the day b/c the marathon blocked off some roads. I got really upset at one point and didnt' know how I was going to get home (it's at least 40min drive). I started to cry a little, but then went back to the finish and found a police man who helped me find another stop for the bus so I could get home. ((police)). If he hadn't helped me, i may have gone full cry mode.

I just wanted to tell you guys b/c you're the closest thing I have to friends I think.

I am in AWE, and I feel honored, that you shared on babble :)

Thank goodness for nice policemen. I'm glad that you didn't have to have a meltdown, for you may have lost precious electrolytes in your tears.

I wish I could be fit. Or at least motivated to be fit. I'm astounded by you.

Well, I'll stop gushing. I hope you get a good rest and that your muscles calm down quickly. Ice and ibuprofen. and lots and lots of ice cream!!!

-Ll

Wow!!!!! a marathon you completed? The whole 26 some odd miles? My dream was to complete a marathon do you know of Jim Fixx the runner? A long time ago I got to run a 6.5 with him. My personal best was 13.5 miles in snow and ice on a New Years Day when living in CT. That's so awesome. I tried to train for one but at five miles knees couldn't take it. Was in 30's then. Your fantastic!!!!!! Love Phillipa

Yeah...26.2 ran the whole way..but very slow (more of a jog i guess). 13.5 is amazing!! especially on ice.

Yes, the knees hurt.

> Wow I'm seriousl impressed did you get the runner's high?

I don't think so...I had to pee the 1st half (i thought i was just nervous at the start so ignored it), so was pretty much focused on that...but there were lines at all the port-o-potties. I stopped at mile 13 at a fast food place finally...then spent the next 6 miles catching up to my "pace group."

>>How long did you train for and do you run daily.

I started about 3 months ago...did about 2 runsof 6-8 miles and 1 long (10-14) each week...I took 2 weeks off also when i decided not to do it about a month.5 ago.

I ran 14 several times, but only did over that(20) once.

I did really poorly on my final the day after marathon...mostly memorization...I think having that day back would've made quite the difference on my score. I'm not sure if it was worth it. I don't know. I've gone back into a depression right now. Very overwhelmed with everything.

I looked up Jim Fixx...interesting story...sort of sad.

I have an autographed book that he wrote called running. But they say he lived ten years longer from the running then he would have as Father and Brother both died of heart Attacks in 30's. He died doing what he loved best a very happy person. Now you need to do some shorter running as your endorphins are probably down again. The test you were exhausted. Sorry you didn't do better. how did you place, speed per hour? Kind of wierd you had to pee as would think you would dehydrate running so far. But we're all different. You did great!!!! Depression better now? Were you depressed during the training or just after the marathon as there is a huge let down after. Love Phillipa

Dear Rose,

Congratulations on finishing!

I ran long distances for over twenty years. It was the only medication then available that alleviated my depression. I have completed over twenty marathons.

The daily long-distance running truly ameliorated my mood for the day. But the marathons were good for about four days. I experienced a feeling of contented peacefulness that nothing else has been able to duplicate.

Which marathon was it? I can give you tips on some of the more famous ones.

Most people decide right after finishing a their first marathon that they will never run another. However, many of them realize weeks later that the subtle but profound sensation of satisfaction that they enjoyed after finishing has dissipated, and change their minds.

Dear Phillipa,

Happy New Year!

I seem to have forgotten to respond to your question about my running another marathon.

The answer is, probably, no. When I ran them, running was the only thing that kept me above water. Also, at the time, I lived on the south shore of Long Island is The Hamptons which was an achingly beautiful place to run in, especially when all the summer people had returned to Manhattan. I now live in San Francisco which doesn't provide the isolation that Long Island did. Also, SSRIs work for me. So, the need, and the ambiance, are different. I'm also a decade older.

Cordially,
YOGI

Yogi being originally from Fairfield County CT used to take ferry over to Long Island and Drive the Hamptons so know what you mean. I did manage to run or jog till 59 then tripped and fell broke arm. Marathons definitely hard on the joints. Still do some running I bet!!!! Love Phillipa
