How to get meds when you can't afford them...

Posted by TexasChic on November 12, 2008, at 18:46:25

... and don't live in Canada. I don't know if this goes here or on the Medication board, so I'll just leave that to 'the powers that be' to decide. Anyway, as most of you know, I'm unemployed, so I'm having trouble affording my meds. I've already stopped taking some (Wellbutrin, Xanax) and cut the dosage of the other (Prozac) in half. I've heard about there being ways to get your meds when you can't afford them, but I don't know where to go for help. I'm also having the problem of needing the to see the pdoc before I get a refill, which of course I don't have the money for. So if anybody has some suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks!

If you see your doc,get samples(of course).
Otherwise you can go to the drug-makers website, Lilly etc and they will have a section for free meds. I bet they're getting lots of hits.

.....and maybe through one of these, except I think they are all (maybe) related anyway

Also, can you get assistance through your state (medicaire, public assistance, whatever you want to call it) for a short time? My D and SIL received a food allowance, some other financial assistance and are still eligible per income limits for nearly free medical in our state. It was the safety net it was supposed to be while they both looked for work and/or work that provided enough hours to support the family. The non-medical aid has long tapered off, but the medical remains.

Maybe you would qualify at least while unemployed, but of course each state is different. I know in some if there are no kids involved, and no factors like women's health (birth control, etc.) a single person might be out of luck. Although with IL and WA, it was possible. And they move quickly and will sometimes give a temporary medical card that day. Now of course, this may be farther than you want to bother to go, as it's just the meds...well, mainly right now. And you'd perhaps have to see a different pdoc if yours doesn't accept the gov't program....but might it be worth it to check?

Just free-associating here....

So sorry to read about your financial situation in another thread! Yikes.

I wonder if you contact the individual pharmaceutical company that makes your pills & tell them your situation.

I thought there was something like that for people to do.

Kath

PS - I am in Canada, but maybe this is the same for you. My doctor often has samples that he will give to people who can't afford meds.

It might be uncomfortabe, but maybe you could ask your physician? Even if it's not your pdoc, you could take your perscription bottle to doc to prove you're on your meds.

Just found this - I googled "free medications"

I didn't check the site, but if you google free medications. or ever "free Prozac" etc you might find something.

I googled Eli Lilly & Co & came up with this.

Once again, didn't read it, but maybe they will help you.

Hope so, keep us posted.

Thanks all of you!

I'm going to check out the sites you recommended and check with my doctor. Thank you all for all your suggestions. Any others are greatly appreciated. I think my main problem is myself - motivating myself to do the footwork to get the meds I need. Skimping isn't helping any, I can feel myself going downhill. Time to push myself.

I checked all the links provided, is it as simple as they make it out to be? Of course, MY problem is that I don't even have a doctor! Still waiting to see county Pdoc!

Do they say that your doctor has to send them a prescription or something? I didn't check any of them.

How long do you think your waiting time will be.

Do you have a family doctor who might write a prescription for you; I guess that would work if you knew which med you needed. Maybe your fam doc would suggest one for you...mine did for me.

Well, they DID say one had to have a physician and that the doc needed to promulgate the proper prescriptions, but after that, the place veried. Some will send meds directly to your house while others send it only to the doc. I found one of the three sites listed in the link will provide a 90-day supply of just about ANY med for $20, which seems reasonable (considering just one non-psych med I take is $102 for 30 days at the Costco!). I plan on looking into this thing!

So it sounds hopeful - affordable meds » paxvox59
