What are you doing to save money ?

Posted by lemonaide on October 3, 2008, at 13:36:53

I am feeling my husband's 20% pay cut right now especially with costs of everything going up.

I am trying to make cheaper meals, and trying not to spend on things I don't need, it is so hard. I am used to being able to afford little shopping trips once in a while. I even canceled my health club membership, that saved 69 a month. I am shopping at cheaper food stores like Aldi's. It is hard to save money when you want to buy healthier foods.
I even try cut down on my driving, I try to do all my errands in one part of town if I can.
Now I am looking at my cable bill, phone, and other bills to see what I can do. Anyone else feeling the pinch?

I'm doing a lot of the things you're doing. It is hard to save money on food when you want to eat healthy, but lately I've been looking at produce prices and buying the less expensive pears, apples and whatever else. I'm also resisting impulse buying which I didn a lot of in the past. I've been getting my house organized so that there's a place for everything. So now when I see some cute nick-nack or kitchen gadget I think, "Do I have a place for that?" and 95% of the time, the answer is "no." I've even been buying fewer books. Afterall, there's so much information I can find online. Luckily, my husband and I have money for all the necessities, but he just bought a new car, so we do what we can to save money.

Our son found a way to cut around $700pa off our phone/internet bill.

Truly, we had been paying rent on a phone that died at least a decade ago.

Well for me and my family, we are going to watch the movies we already own that we haven't seen in a long time and maybe play one of the several games we have. Plus we already use the library, so we are going their tomorrow.

Wow, that is awesome, 700. We are trying to decide if we can do with out a land line. I know I can get a land line with my cell phone company for 19.99 a month that includes free long distance and all the perks. Gonna cancel AT&T at 39 bucks for nothing.

Hi Lemonaide,

I'm definitely feelng the pinch. We're only eating out once a week and going to movies with a discount card or bargain matinees.

We just bundled our home phone, internet and cable and that looks like it will save us about $20 per month. Not much, but anything helps until I get fulltime work again. Darn economy.

The wealthiest 400 people in America have/own more then
"middle class" 150 million Americans combined. Something is not quite right with this picture. Hmmm.

Followups about political matters should be posted to the Politics board. Followups about faith matters (that are supportive of faith) should be posted to the faith board.

Followups about personal economizing can remain here on Social.

Thanks.

HI there...great post. We are smothered. There are bills, and I am not even talking about all the old bills I cannot even pay since I got even sicker years back...normal bills that are racking up that we cannot pay. I am trying to be frugal by cooking things like soup or one pot meals and freezing some ahead of time. I also bought tvp (texturized vegetable protein to use), and some tofu that was on sale because it was going to expire and froze it. It is hard. Everything else, well hopefully we won't have to cut anything as our internet is what runs our phone. Hope things get better for everyone cuz this is just too much...
Feeling the pinch, and also the punch..
peace

Well I think I can add to my previous cost cutting measures.

I had started in preliminary discussions with my employers about cutting down my hours even more, since my husband would like me to quit altogether.

But I got scared enough yesterday to back off that suggestion and table it for the indefinite future. My retirement plan statement came in the mail. :(
